I am an applied medical anthropologist beginning my PhD in Public Health this fall. For the second summer in a row, I will travel with my research partner, Ginger Mckay, to Kampala, Uganda. Last summer, we evaluated an HIV education program for children developed by the Savannah Sunrise Foundation, which is a non-profit organization. We we will be residing in Kampala from the end of May until the end of July to conduct additional fieldwork. This summer, our colleague Nicole Smith will be joining us as we wrap up our project.

Preparing for our trip

Hey y'all!

I am preparing to leave for my research trip to Uganda!! As my practicum project for my Master's degree, I am conducting summer research there!

So far, my research partner Ginger and I have been very lucky to recieve funding from private donations we acquired from fundraising, and also from the International Study Abroad Office. We feel very fortunate, and hopefully we will not have to pay much out-of-pocket for this trip.

I would like to thank everyone who has donated and supported us in this process!!

We depart May 22nd!!!

  5. Hope you got some well deserved rest. I took Sadie and Maggie for a ride tonight after dinner with Iris and Ann Marie. They both asked about you and are very excited to hear about your trip. The dogs were so happy to get out of the house. Martha is trying to break into my room right now. she has both her paws under the door and is making a strange MEOW. Jade keeps sneaking and sleeping on the white couch. They are all good animals. When martha came downstairs Sadie started wagging her tail like she was so happy to see her.Martha wants to be the boss of everyone around here. she is really trying to win Mike over. I think she is successful. I miss you and I love you. Hope you are happy.

  6. Meagan, this is INCREDIBLE! I am so happy for you. (I have tried to blog for the past day and a half now and wrote a lot of stuff and I don't know where it went) The whole experience sounds dreamy, and Joan sounds really nice. Ginger is very brave. I must say, you got to go with a really awesome girl! Tell her I said Hey. I know you are having a Blast! I love your post about the journey thus far, and the coffee story. I can vision all of it happening and I read, and it sounds fantasic! I wanted to keep reading more and more because it was soooo interesting! I love you so much Meg, and I really am proud of you!!! Can't wait to see pictures!

  7. How was your weekend in Uganda? Week one is over. I am looking forward to you coming home in 9 weeks. I really miss you but I am glad you are doing this. Don't worry about AT&T. As for Martha, she is a mess. She is very sneaky and demanding. She now waits under the chair near the back door and when you open it she tries to escape. She did it this morning when Mike went outside. I watched her back there exploring. She went under the bushes down the paths and all the way around the back yard to the fence and jumped over into the front yard. Mike went out front and caught her. I let her go in the garage after that so she could explore in there to get some of the restlessness out of her. I love you Meagan and keep telling us full details of your experience. We love hearing about it.

  8. Hi Meagan, that is so interesting that the animals just walk around the town like that. Kind of like the donkeys in Arizona. What do they plant in their gardens? I am concerned about the trash everywhere. What about bathrooms, do they have septic tanks? Have you gone to the schools yet? do they have year round school? It has been our rainy season here as well lately. We need it and it has cooled off some. I look forward to reading your blog everyday.
    I love you,
    mom
